What is an .ASE file?

.ASE is Adobe Swatch Exchange File

File used by Adobe InDesign and Illustrator professional page layout and graphics applications; also used by Adobe Color, a touch app for Android and iOS devices; contains a color swatch, which is a saved collection of colors; allows illustrators and publishers to share color swatches.

NOTE: ASE files were introduced with version 2 of Adobe's Creative Suite (CS). Photoshop saves color swatches as .ACO files.

An ASE file contains a sprite created by Aseprite, an animated sprite editor and pixel art tool. It stores a 2D animation or graphic, which includes layers, frames, palettes, tags, and settings. ASE files may also be saved as .ASEPRITE files.

ASE and ASEPRITE files are saved in the same format and are the most common files associated with Aseprite. The files are created to store the sprite graphic or animation and can be closed and re-opened for further editing in Aseprite.

You can create an ASE file in Aseprite by selecting File → New..., then File → Save or Save As..., and choosing the ASE format. You can open an ASE file in Aseprite by selecting File → Open... or Open Recent and choosing the ASE file.

Aseprite can also be used to export ASE files to more popular formats, such as .PNG or .GIF files. To do this, open the ASE file and select File → Save Copy As.

How to solve problems with ASE files

  • Associate the ASE file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any ASE file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.ASE files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the ASE file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
  • Update your software that should actually open .ASE is Adobe Swatch Exchange File. Because only the current version supports the latest ASE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe Systems manufacturer website after an available .ASE is Adobe Swatch Exchange File update.
  • To make sure that your ASE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
