A DAR file is a project used by DVD Architect, a program for authoring DVDs. It contains various components of a DVD project including source file locations, insertion points, text, and chapters. DAR files do not contain the actual images, video, and audio displayed in the project but are used to create the final product when the user is done editing.

You can create a DAR project file by selecting File → New then choose the type of project you want to make. The different types include:

  • Menu Based - Produces a DVD that displays a menu when played
  • Music/Video Compilation - Produces a DVD that contains a compilation of video and audio files
  • Picture Compilation - Produces a DVD that displays a slideshow of images
  • Single Movie - Produces a DVD that contains a single movie with no menus

When choosing the project you can also pick the settings for the disc format, video format, and audio format.
