XIF (eXtended Image Format) file originally created for the ScanSoft Pagis scanning software; designed as an extension to the .TIFF format for storing text documents as images; separates the image into four layers:

  • Text layer for optical character recognition (OCR)
  • Layer for text colors
  • Color image segments layer
  • Background tint layer
  • NOTE: ScanSoft is now Nuance Communications. The XIF file format is still supported by some Nuance applications.
