.WORD is MacWrite document

The word file extension is related to MacWrite, a word processor application released along with the first Apple Macintosh systems in 1984 and used for its default document format.

MacWrite was the first such program that was widely available to the public to offer WYSIWYG operation, with multiple fonts and styles. Together with MacPaint, it was one of the two original "killer applications" that propelled the adoption and popularity of the GUI in general, and the Mac in particular.

.WORD file format is deprecated and this file format is no longer supported.

Currently, .WORD file type is not actively used and is obsolete. This usually happens with system files in older operating systems, files from long-discontinued software, or with previous versions of some file types (documents, projects, images, etc.) that were replaced in later versions of the original programs.
