A WMV file is a video file based on the Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container format and compressed with Windows Media compression. It contains video encoded with one of Microsoft's Windows Media Video (WMV) proprietary codecs and is similar to an .ASF file.

The WMV file is one of the most common files used to store video in Windows. You may see the file when downloading video from the Internet or when someone shares a video via USB device or email. You can watch video stored in WMV files with a variety of media players. Windows Video and Media Player are popular choices since they come installed with many Windows operating systems.

Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 was the last version of the Windows Media Player developed for Mac OS X. However, Mac users can use Flip4Mac WMV (also known as Microsoft Windows Media Components for QuickTime) to play WMV files.

NOTE: Windows Media Audio (WMA) files are saved with a .WMA extension.

How to solve problems with WMV files

  • Associate the WMV file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any WMV file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.WMV files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the WMV file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
  • Update your software that should actually open .WMV is Windows Media Video File. Because only the current version supports the latest WMV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available .WMV is Windows Media Video File update.
  • To make sure that your WMV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
