What is an .WIDGET file?

.WIDGET is Yahoo! Widget

Small program referred to as a "widget" that is run by the Yahoo! Widget Engine; formerly run within Konfabulator, which is now part of Yahoo!.

NOTE: Yahoo! Widgets has been discontinued and the website is no longer available. WIDGET files are saved in a .ZIP format and can be opened with any Zip decompression utility. Simply rename the file extension from ".widget" to ".zip" and extract the archive.

HTML-based widget used by Windows Mobile, an operating system for PDAs, digital phones, and other mobile devices; contains an archive of files in a compressed Zip format; may store .HTML, .XML, .CSS, and .JS files, as well as other Web-based files.

WIDGET files are used for deploying small programs for capabilities such as weather and news reports, maps, and games.

NOTE: WIDGET files are actually .ZIP files that have been renamed with the ".widget" extension. Therefore, you can unpack them by renaming the file extension to ".zip" and decompressing them using any Zip-compatible decompression utility.

HybridJava WIDGET files should be placed within the \widgets subdirectory on the Web server. HybridJava Compiler has been discontinued.

How to solve problems with WIDGET files

  • Associate the WIDGET file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any WIDGET file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.WIDGET files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the WIDGET file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
  • Update your software that should actually open .WIDGET is Yahoo! Widget. Because only the current version supports the latest WIDGET file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Yahoo! manufacturer website after an available .WIDGET is Yahoo! Widget update.
  • To make sure that your WIDGET file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
