A W01 file is a backup data file created by Samsung Recovery software, a program that comes with Samsung computers to backup and recover data. It contains a partial backup of a computer system that can be restored if all other necessary backup files are present.

W01 files are located in the \SamsungRecovery\ directory. The files are saved in a proprietary format and can only be opened and restored with the Samsung Recovery software used to create them.

NOTE: Samsung Recovery was originally called Recovery Solution but changed to Recovery with the release of version 6, which followed version 5.6.

Common W01 Filenames

user1.w01 - The name of the backup file that contains a state backup. The next file will be named user1.w02, then user1.w03, and so on.

init.w01 - The name of the backup that contains the factory image (formerly called initial image), which is an image used to restore the computer's original factory firmware and settings.
