Image created in the VICAR (Video Image Access and Retrieval) format, which was originally developed for planetary mission imaging data; contains an ASCII text header and one or more images saved as records of binary data; most commonly known for storing captured images from planetary mission systems.

VICAR images were designed for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) unmanned planetary spacecraft. They were used during the 1970s and 1980s for the following missions: Mariner 9 to Mars, Mariner 10 to Mercury and Venus, Voyager to the outer planets.

VICAR images are also used for cartography, biomedical, geology, and astronomy applications.
