HTTP File Server Template

Category: Web Files Format: Text

A TPL file is a template used by HTTP File Server (HFS), a file sharing program used to send and receive files over HTTP. It contains HTML divided into sections that describe each part of an HTML page served to a requesting browser. TPL files are used by HFS to dynamically build HTML pages.

TPL files primarily store HTML but may also contain CSS and JavaScript. HFS takes the HTML (or CSS or JavaScript) code from TPL files that are categorized by sections with square brackets ([]). Some of the sections include style, link, comment, and upload. TPL files also include symbols surrounded by percentage signs (%) used to define each section.

To open and edit TPL files in HFS, you must be in "Expert mode" in HFS. To enter expert mode, select Menu → Other options → Switch to Expert mode. Once in expert mode, select Menu again then choose HTML template → Edit... or Change file....

NOTE: Templates are typically stored in the same folder as the hfs.exe file.

The template language found in TPL files consists of HTML and simple Phorum template statements. These statements support four data types, which may be integers, strings, PHP constants, or template variables. Since the template language is stored in TPL files as plain text, you can open and edit TPL files with any text editor.

Phorum typically uses TPL files for storing template code but may also use .PHP files if they are placed in the template directory and are named with the appropriate basename. For example, if Phorum is displaying the footer template, it first searches for footer.php in the template directory and if the file does not exist, will then look for footer.tpl. The inclusion of PHP files allows users to only use PHP/HTML code for templates if they do not want to use the Phorum template language required by TPL templates.
