Smokeview Simulation Data

Developer by: National Institute of Standards and Technology Category: Data Files Format: Text

An SMV file is a data file created by Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) modeling software. It contains output data from FDS about a fire simulation. SMV files can be viewed with Smokeview, a program used to visualize Fire Dynamics Simulator output data.

SMV files store output data, which includes a set of keywords, such as FIRE, DEVICE, HEAT, SPRK, and ROOM. These keywords include information about the context of the fire, such as the location of the zone fire, the location and name of sensors, heat detectors, or sprinklers, heat detector location data, sprinkler location data, and the number and characteristics of the room containing the fire. While SMV files are typically opened using Smokeview, the files can also be opened with a text editor since they are saved in plain text.

NOTE: Fire Dynamics Simulator and Smokeview are developed by NIST, which stands for National Institute of Standards and Technology.
