.SMOD is Stonehearth Mod File

An SMOD file is a Zip-compressed file that contains a mod used by Radiant Entertainment Stonehearth, a game where you defend and build up a village to survive with other pioneer settlers. It stores a directory with all of the modification files (image, model, or data files) and a .JSON file (manifest.json) that describes the mod. SMOD files are used to alter gameplay, such as adding new furniture, food recipes, equipment, and language translations.

Creating modifications is encouraged in Stonehearth and many users create and share SMOD files with the Stonehearth community. To add a mod to Stonehearth, place the SMOD file in one of the following directories:

  • If you installed StoneHearth through Humble Bundle - C:\Program Files (x86)\Stonehearth\mods
  • If you installed StoneHearth through Steam - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Stonehearth\mods

Once the SMOD file is placed in the mods folder, open Stonehearth and the mod is accessible and active.

Since SMOD files are compressed with Zip compression, they can be expanded using a Zip decompression utility. Simply rename the .smod extension to .zip and use a Zip decompression program to expand the contents and view them. Some Zip programs include Corel WinZip, 7-Zip, Apple Archive Utility, and ES File Explorer.
