Both the LMHOSTS file and the sample file are located in %windir% on Windows 95, 98, and Millenium Edition. They are located in %windir%system32driversetc. on Windows NT 4.0 through 7 and Windows Server 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2.

NOTE: The LMHOSTS file is not used by Windows 8.

How to Open .SAM file on different platforms

Open .SAM File on Windows

  • Right-click a .SAM
  • Left-click "Open With" > "Choose another app"
  • Select the program that opens .SAM file and Select check box "Always use this app to open .SAM files" Press "Ok"

Open .SAM File on Mac

  • Right-click (or Ctrl + Left-click) the .SAM file
  • Click "Open With" > "Other.."
  • Then choose another program from the app list and press "Open"
  • Select check box "Turn on" for "Always open in app"
