What is a .QCOW file extension?

.QCOW is QEMU Copy On Write Disk Image

Disk image file saved in the QEMU Copy On Write (QCOW) format, a format used by QEMU virtualization software; stores the contents of a virtual machine's hard drive; supports zlib compression and AES encryption of separate, independent clusters.

QEMU differs from other virtualization policies that allocate fixed amounts of disk space, in which some of the empty space may go unused. QEMU's strategy delays allocation of storage until the disk space is needed, which allows for smaller file sizes.

NOTE: The QCOW format has been replaced by the QCOW2 format, which uses the .QCOW2 file extension.
