What is a .PVF file extension?

.PVF file extension is created by Marc Schaefer. .PVF has been classified as Audio Files.

.PVF is Portable Voice Format

A PVF file is an audio file saved in the portable voice format (PVF). It contains human speech, most likely recorded from a phone call using Mgetty-voice, also known as Vgetty, which is a software package used to create an answering machine on a Unix computer using a voice modem.

Vgetty is a package that can be installed on Unix operating systems to use the capabilities of a voice modem to record and play messages. The software package includes a pvftools directory with utilities to convert voice files. Vgetty only supports voice files converted to the raw modem format (RMF). However, phone call audio is typically recorded in .WAV or .VOC format, which means the “pvftools” utilities must be used to convert the format to RMF in order to play it. Since the Vgetty utilities cannot convert the WAV or VOC files directly to RMF, PVF is used as an intermediate format. This means that Vgetty can be used to convert the initial phone call audio format to PVF and then used to convert PVF audio to the RMF format.

Although PVF files are typically converted instead of played, they can be opened by Nullsoft Winamp. PVF files can also be converted to other formats, such as .MP3 and .AAC using Factory Audio Converter.
