You will most likely only encounter PLASMOID files if you use Plasma and are manually installing a widget. Plasma is available with the K Desktop Environment (KDE) and included on various Linux distributions, such as Kubuntu, KDE neon, or openSUSE.

There are several ways to install a widget in Plasma, including from KDE-Look.org, from the Konsole terminal emulator, or from a local PLASMOID file. To install a PLASMOID widget file using Konsole, type the following command:

plasmapkg -u [widget file name].plasmoid

You can also import a PLASMOID widget file by following these instructions:

  • Select Add Widgets... from the desktop menu
  • Click Get New Widgets → Install Widget From Local File....
  • Choose the "Plasmoid" type of widget and click Next.
  • Select the PLASMOID file and click Finish.
