A PAL file contains a color palette used by various Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulators. It stores information about the intensity of red, green, and blue colors for the output of emulated games.

PAL files are used to emulate the PPU of the NES, which is a chip that outputs RGB video from the system to the screen. The PAL file typically stores 64 3-byte RGB entries since there are 64 NES color values.

Painter Custom Palettes File

Settings file created by Corel Painter, a digital art application; saves the layout of workspace palettes, such as the Mixer, Layers, Color, and Navigator palettes; allows artists to customize screen layouts for different painting needs.

Custom palettes can be saved by selecting Window → Arrange Palettes → Save Layout.... They can be loaded by selecting Window → Arrange Palettes and then choosing a custom palette from the menu. The default arrangement is called "Default."

NOTE: PAL files are not manually saved by the user. Instead Corel Painter uses PAL files to allow the user to load and save palette arrangements through the user interface.

How to Open .PAL file on different platforms

Open .PAL File on Windows

  • Right-click a .PAL
  • Left-click "Open With" > "Choose another app"
  • Select the program that opens .PAL file and Select check box "Always use this app to open .PAL files" Press "Ok"

Open .PAL File on Mac

  • Right-click (or Ctrl + Left-click) the .PAL file
  • Click "Open With" > "Other.."
  • Then choose another program from the app list and press "Open"
  • Select check box "Turn on" for "Always open in app"

Right click on the .PAL file, choose "Open with" and select a program from the list above
