What is an .MPEG2 file?

.MPEG2 is MPEG-2 Video File

Video file encoded with the MPEG-2 codec, which is mainly used for over-the-air, satellite, and cable digital TV signals and DVD video; uses lossy compression for audio and video to significantly reduce the size of the video data; not as efficient as the H.264 format.

The MPEG2 extension is not as common as the .MPG extension or the .MPG2 extension for storing MPEG-2 video. Audio files that are compressed with the MPEG-2 codec use the .MP2 extension.

NOTE: MPEG stands for Moving Pictures Expert Group.
