.MCT file extension is created by Microsoft. .MCT has been classified as Data Files.

.MCT is Windows Live Messenger Data File

File created by Live Messenger, a Windows instant messaging program; contains program specific data such as animated winks, backgrounds, scenes, sounds, and user tiles that can be customized.

You can modify any of the MCT files to enhance your Live Messenger experience. To change, say your Live Messenger scene:

  • Click on the window icon near the top-right of the Live Messenger window.
  • Select Tools → Change your scene..., a "Scene" window should then open.
  • Select your scene from the default scene options or import a scene by selecting Browse... and click OK.
  • If you have Live Messenger installed, MCT files will most likely be located in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\.

    MCT files are similar to .CAB files, use a program like WinZip or 7-Zip to open them.

    NOTE: Windows Live Messenger was discontinued in 2013 and has moved to Skype.

    backgrounds.mct - Contains .JPG or .PNG files that make up a background for Live Messenger.

    winks.mct - Contains animated winks for Live Messenger.

    scenes.mct - Contains JPG and PNG files that create a scene for Live messenger.

    How to fix problems with .MCT files

    1. You need to update the application that you normally use to open .MCT files. Only the latest version of the software supports the current .MCT file format
