What is an .LOCKY file?

.LOCKY is Locky ransomware affected data

File extension locky is most recently related to a new ransomware labeled as Locky. Much like similar ransomware it encrypts users files and demands ransom to be paid in bitcoins.

This particular ransomware is distributed with through email messages that contain a subject similar to "Invoice 2016-52672652" or similar. Do not open the attachment at all costs.

Note: Some other ransomware also use locky suffix, in effort to imitate the original Locky to intimidate the user. One of such is for example the Powerware ransomware.

How to open:

Such files can only be accessed again and recovered when you pay the ransom in bitcoins. You can also wait until new decrypter is made and available for public.

How to convert:

You cannot convert or recover *.locky files without some decryption utility.

How to solve problems with LOCKY files

  • Associate the LOCKY file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any LOCKY file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.LOCKY files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the LOCKY file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
  • Update your software that should actually open .LOCKY is Locky ransomware affected data. Because only the current version supports the latest LOCKY file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available .LOCKY is Locky ransomware affected data update.
  • To make sure that your LOCKY file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
