What is an .EPUB file?

.EPUB is Open eBook File

An EPUB file is a digital ebook saved in the EPUB format, an open XML-based format for digital books and publications. It provides a standard digital publication format for publishers and consumers. EPUB files can be viewed with supporting software programs and hardware devices, such as the Sony Reader and Barnes & Noble Nook.

The EPUB format is based on three open standards, which are all maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).

  • The Open Publication Structure (OPS), which defines the content markup
  • The Open Packaging Format (OPF), which describes the ebook structure
  • The Open Container Format (OCF), which packages all the ebook files together in a compressed format
  • NOTE: Many commercial ebooks include digital rights management (DRM) protection. These files can only be opened on devices that have been authorized to view the ebook.

    How to solve problems with EPUB files

    • Associate the EPUB file extension with the correct application. On :
      Windows: Right click on any EPUB file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.EPUB files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the EPUB file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
    • Update your software that should actually open .EPUB is Open eBook File. Because only the current version supports the latest EPUB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the IDPF manufacturer website after an available .EPUB is Open eBook File update.
    • To make sure that your EPUB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
