.DSS File Extension

A DSS file is a configuration backup created by DiskStation Manager (DSM), a web-based operating system included with Synology network-attached storage (NAS) devices. It contains settings for a system, which includes users, groups, shared folders, workgroup, domain, passwords, and file sharing methods. DSS files can be used to restore settings to a system's configuration.

NAS devices allow you to store your digital files, whether they are documents, music, photos, or video, making them accessible at any time.The DSM allows you to manage the files stored on your NAS device. When you back up the configuration settings of an NAS device through DSM, the DSS file is created to store the settings.

To create a DSS backup configuration file go to Control Panel → Update & Restore and click Back up configuration. The DSS file is then downloaded to your computer.

To restore a DSS backup configuration file go to Control Panel → Update & Restore and click Restore configuration.

Audio file saved by a digital voice recorder or speech recognition program; stores voice audio data in a highly-compressed format; can be written in insert or overwrite mode; commonly used for professional transcript environments, such as law firms.

DSS files may be written with metadata, such as the date and time of dictation, audio length, and priority.

The DSS file format was originally developed under the International Voice Association (IVA), which was comprised of Olympus America, Philips Electronics, and Grundig. DSS files can be converted to more common audio file types, such as .WAV files.

Windows screensaver file; used by Windows to run a screensaver animation or movie when the computer is inactive for a certain amount of time (which can be set by the user); adds additional screensavers to the list available in the Screensaver tab of the Displays control panel.
