.DOS is Microsoft Windows 95 / MS-DOS system files backup

The dos file extension is associated with dual boot of MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows 95 operating systems.

When installing Microsoft Windows 95 over a preexisting MS-DOS install, config.sys and autoexec.bat are renamed to config.dos and autoexec.dos. This is intended to ease dual booting between Microsoft Windows 95 and older MS-DOS.

.DOS file format is deprecated and this file format is no longer supported.

Currently, .DOS file type is not actively used and is obsolete. This usually happens with system files in older operating systems, files from long-discontinued software, or with previous versions of some file types (documents, projects, images, etc.) that were replaced in later versions of the original programs.
