The actual extension is just crypt7, the DB is part of the file name however. A crypt7 file stores encrypted and protected database with chat history.

The crypt7 file is encrypted by personal key stored in:
/data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key file
Tools that are able to decrypt *.crypt7 files, need this file. To grab it you need Root installed in your Android phone and use for example MyPhoneExplorer, or Root Explorer file manager and make a copy of key file.
By default, the file is called: msgstore.db.crypt7 and it is stored in phone SDcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder.
