What is an .CRYPT9 file?

.CRYPT9 is WhatsApp Encrypted Database File

Encrypted database file created and used by WhatsApp Messenger, a messaging application for Android devices. It contains an encrypted database of chat history messages. CRYPT9 files are located on the SD card of Android devices.

The "crypt9" extension is one of many "crypt" extensions such as "crypt6", "crypt7", and "crypt8". The extension is often appended to a .DB file to create the db.crypt9 file, which is used by WhatsApp to secure a user's message database on his or her Android device. For each new installment, the application uses a different algorithm to encrypt the DB files. The extension appended to the DB file, such as .CRYPT7 or .CRYPT8, signifies the algorithm.

How to solve problems with CRYPT9 files

  • Associate the CRYPT9 file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any CRYPT9 file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.CRYPT9 files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the CRYPT9 file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
