What is an .COLLAB file?

.COLLAB is Blackboard Collaborate Session File

A COLLAB file is a session file used by Blackboard Collaborate Launcher, a utility that allows users to launch Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing sessions and recordings. It contains a link to a conferencing session or recording that launches Blackboard Collaborate and brings the user to the session or recording.

In order to open a COLLAB file, you must have the Collaborate Launcher installed on your computer. Follow the steps below to download and install the Collaborate Launcher:

  • Go to the Blackboard Collaborate website and log in to your course.
  • Click "Join Room."
  • Select "Join Room" on the Room Details page or click a recording link from the "Recordings" table.
  • Download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher when prompted.
  • Once you download and install the launcher, click the session or recording link again from the Blackboard Collaborate website. The download of the COLLAB file (meeting.collab or play.collab) begins and will be saved to your "Downloads" folder. You can also access the COLLAB file through your browser (at the bottom of the window for Chrome users). The COLLAB file can be opened with the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.

    How to solve problems with COLLAB files

    • Associate the COLLAB file extension with the correct application. On :
      Windows: Right click on any COLLAB file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.COLLAB files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the COLLAB file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
    • Update your software that should actually open .COLLAB is Blackboard Collaborate Session File. Because only the current version supports the latest COLLAB file format.
