What is an .BOOK file?

.BOOK is iBooks Author Document

Book design project created by iBooks Author, a program used for authoring digital books for the Apple iPad; stores the sections and chapters of an iBook; can be exported to the .IBOOKS format and directly uploaded to an iPad, or may be published to the Apple iBookstore using the .ITMSP format.

iBook Author documents can also be exported to .PDF and .TXT (plain text) formats for reading on the local computer or other devices.

NOTE: iBooks Author uses the .IBA file extension as the default extension for iBooks designs. However, it also supports the ".book" extension for designs.

A BOOK file is a book created by BookSmart, a free tool used to create photo books, notebooks, and planners. It contains the pages of a book, which includes text, images, and layout settings. BOOK files are saved in an XML format.

The BOOK file is the main file type associated with BookSmart. When you save a book project, the program creates the BOOK file to store the contents. You can choose books with different page layouts, such as wedding album, cookbook, guestbook, notebook, and yearbook. You can also choose from different themes that include photo borders and page backgrounds with coordinating colors. If you want to back up or share your BOOK file you can export the project as a .BOOKEXPORT file.

To create a BOOK file, select File → New → Book Project. You can save a BOOK file by selecting File → Save. Once you save the BOOK file, BookSmart will automatically save the file and any edits you make going forward.

Book file created by FrameMaker, a program used to generate books and other large documents; stores references to FrameMaker documents (.FM and .MIF files), which can contain chapters, appendixes, table of contents, and other books; enables users to compile a book from smaller document subparts.

NOTE: When you rename files referenced in a BOOK file, FrameMaker also renames the referenced files on disk. This is because FrameMaker books contain links to the actual FrameMaker documents on the computer's hard drive.

File used by Budget In Brief, a program used for generating budget documents; saved using XML formatting and contains document generation properties; also includes references to input budget data files and the output document templates; can be used to generate Microsoft Word .DOCX files and .PDF documents.

Budget In Brief supports several different document types for creating the output budget reports. These formats include .DOC, .DOCX, .RTF, .HTML, and .ODT. The program can also accept input data sources from Microsoft Excel .XLSX files and .XML files.

NOTE: BOOK files are currently created using a plain text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad, or an XML editor. Budget In Brief is no longer available for download.

How to solve problems with BOOK files

  • Associate the BOOK file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any BOOK file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.BOOK files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the BOOK file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
  • Update your software that should actually open .BOOK is iBooks Author Document. Because only the current version supports the latest BOOK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apple manufacturer website after an available .BOOK is iBooks Author Document update.
  • To make sure that your BOOK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
