What is an .AS file?

.AS is ActionScript File

An AS file is a source code file written in ActionScript, a scripting language originally developed by Macromedia but now developed by Adobe Systems. It contains variables, functions, and references to other files. AS files are typically used for creating interactive Flash applications.

ActionScript files are often saved along with the Animate movie (.FLA file) that references the AS file. ActionScript files can be edited within Animate or with a basic text editor.

NOTE: Animate was formerly known as Flash, which was originally developed by Macromedia but then merged with Adobe in 2005. Flash became Animate in 2016.

An AS file is a source code file written in AngelScript, a scripting library used to extend the functionality of applications via external scripts. It contains AngelScript, which includes functions, variables, script classes, expressions, statements, and object handles.

AngelScript class syntax is similar to C/C++. AngelScript can be used with any C++ IDE and C/C++ functions can be called within an AngelScript environment. AngelScript is primarily used in the development of video games such as Rigs of Rods, Penumbra: Overture, Dustforce, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. AS files can be edited with basic text editors.

NOTE: AS files are also used to store ActionScript source code.
