What is an .ALAC file?

.ALAC is ALAC Encoded Audio File

Audio file created with the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC); used for storing digital music losslessly without losing any sound quality from the original audio data; differs from lossy audio codecs such as AAC.

NOTE: If you see a file with the extension ".alac," it probably is actually an .M4A file (MPEG-4 audio) with a misnamed file extension. This is because ALAC is a codec used for encoding audio data and not an audio file container format like an MPEG-4 file.
