What is an .AEX file?

.AEX is After Effects Plug-in

An AEX file is a plug-in used by Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, which are professional video-editing applications. It stores content that extends the functionality of the After Effects application, such as support for camera raw files or video filters. AEX files are written in the C/C++ programming language.

Several plugins come installed with After Effects. However, they may also be created and sold by third-party developers. You can install a plug-in to extend the functionality of After Effects by placing it in the plug-ins folder.

AEX plugins are stored in the following directory:

  • Windows - Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects (version)\Support Files\Plug-ins
  • macOS - Applications/Adobe/Adobe After Effects (version)/Plug-ins

You may have to restart After Effects in order to use a newly installed plug-in.

AEX files can be created by checking the Compile functions into an AEX file? option when creating a Web application. By default, the generated AEX file uses the same prefix name as the corresponding .ADB file.

How to solve problems with AEX files

  • Associate the AEX file extension with the correct application. On :
    Windows: Right click on any AEX file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.AEX files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the AEX file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
  • Update your software that should actually open .AEX is After Effects Plug-in. Because only the current version supports the latest AEX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe Systems manufacturer website after an available .AEX is After Effects Plug-in update.
  • To make sure that your AEX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
